Back injury at work is the number one reason for workman’s compensation claims. Hundreds of millions,if not billions, of dollars are lost each year in medical bills,compensation, benefits,replacement costs and lost productivity.
There are literally thousands of people each year who are injured on the job, ranging from minor problems to severe injuries requiring extensive treatment. When To Return To Work

On the other hand, leaving the person on compensation for long periods of time costs money, so a balance needs to be struck between when the person is truly healed enough to go back to the job they had been doing previously.

Physicians are advised to promote healthy exercise to help keep muscles strengthened and to keep the patient active, while practicing conservative measures in their care. This can help to minimize prolonged time of work and possible complications.
In some patients suffering from low back pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antidepressants can offer some relief from pain.
If a patient seems to be having difficulty returning to work, professionals need to assess whether there are any occupational or personal psychosocial barriers preventing them from going back to work.
When it is time to start preparing to go back to work, it is important for the medical professionals to help facilitate communication with the patient, employer, compensation providers and any other healthcare providers that are involved in the care.
Whenever possible, have the patient return to work early doing temporary modified duty.
There are many variables that play a part in returning to work after an absence, and some patients may require help adjusting to returning to the work force. After suffering an injury such as one in the lower back, it is possible that the person may have lingering trouble that will need to be assessed regularly, and perhaps they may even need to change or adjust the work that they were involved in before their injury.
There are many injuries that result in the need for workman’s compensation, and low back pain has become one that is reported most often by workers. Finding adequate treatments and teaching healthy ways to avoid injury on the job are very important factors that need to be considered to bring the number of injured workers to a minimum.
